Marieanne Barry
Trained as a nurse. Marieanne’s background is surgical and post-operative surgical nursing. Prior to her involvement with Southern Area Hospice Services, Newry, she worked in the medical ward of St John of God Hospital, Newry. She has been involved with the Hospice from the very beginning, attending a series of meetings with the staff and management to consider the possibility of establishing a hospice service within St John of God Hospital. Marieanne was very interested in the idea of hospice work and applied for a job as an enrolled nurse, working on night duty. Later on an opportunity arose for her to change her status to staff nurse. She talks about her role as both an enrolled and a staff nurse; management of the hospice during the early years; the way in which patients were cared for and the relationship between the nursing and medical staff. She goes on to discuss the main problems she has encountered; the principle changes that have occurred; the impact of the religious and political situation in Northern Ireland; the geographical separation of Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK; and their relationship with the other hospices in the Province. Marieanne ends by talking about what she feels the future holds for Southern Area Hospice Services.
