| Sister Bridget Finucane |
Born in 1944 in County Clare, Sister Brigid Finucane lost both her mother and father before joining the religious nursing
order, the Little Company of Mary, in 1964. Sister Brigid trained as a nurse at St Johns Hospital in Limerick, before moving
to Milford House, a nursing home for the elderly. The Little Company of Mary was founded to care for the sick and dying
and in the 1970s reviewed this charism in the light of hospice philosophy. Sister Brigid, herself, trained and worked at St
Christophers Hospice for six months in 1976-77, before returning to Milford House where some beds had now been designated
for the terminally ill, and a Medical Director appointed. In 1983 a purpose-built, twenty-bedded hospice was opened, and in
1989 Sister Brigid became Education Co-ordinator. The interview discusses the development of the hospice in the light of its
relationship with the Little Company of Mary, the wider Church, the local community, and professionals working in the community.
