| Jean Gaffney |
Having trained as a nurse/midwife in Cheshire, Jean Gaffney worked with TB patients in Sheffield's Winter Street Hospital
before moving to work at the Bakewell Cottage Hospital. It was here that talk of Eric Wilkes' plan for a hospice in Sheffield
first came to her attention. Jean Gaffney was among the first group of staff to work at St Luke's when it opened in 1971.
After six/seven years as a ward sister, Jean Gaffney began to find nursing the dying stressful and moved over to the catering
department, first as Housekeeping Sister, then as Kitchen Manager (a title she still holds). As well as discussion of the
dietary needs of patients, the interview covers the staff/patients/visitors at St Luke's, Eric Wilkes, nursing, the building,
education, the summer fayres, and local reactions to the hospice.
