Patricia Gilbert
Patricia came to work at St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds, in August 1978. Prior to that she had been a staff nurse on a surgical ward where she had been greatly dissatisfied with the nursing care given to cancer patients. She initially worked as a part time staff nurse on night duty on the in-patient wards at St Gemma’s Hospice. After 9 ½ years she was asked if she would like to join the home care team. Patricia talks about her role as a staff nurse, the type of care that was being given to patients and how this changed during her time on the wards. She then moves on to talk about her work as a home care nurse, particularly the way in which it differed to her previous role. She also discusses how the work of the home care team fits into the work of the multidisciplinary team; the ways in which her relationship with patients has changed; the main problems and changes she has encountered over the years; and the role of the Sisters of the Cross and Passion in the Hospice.
