| Bernadette Healy |
Bernadette left school at sixteen, and worked temporarily as an office worker in local businesses before taking employment
with a Dublin newspaper. After two years in this job she moved to England and worked with a television rental company, which
she later left to have a child. Bernadette eventually moved back to Derry and, after a few months, learned that an administrative
job was available at Foyle Hospice. Initially she was employed for a limited period through the ACE Scheme but after a years
absence returned as a full-time employee, again with ACE. Bernadette discusses her changing role during her time at the hospice,
the organisation of the Administration Department, and the reaction of the local community to the presence of a hospice in
their midst. She also discusses the impact of the religious and political situation in Northern Ireland, the geographical
separation of Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK, and their relationship with other Hospices in the Province. Bernadette
concludes with her thoughts about the future of Southern Area Hospice Services.
