Steve Kirk
Trained as a nurse, Steve Kirk has a long history in nursing and nurse management. Much of his work has focused on neurology and oncology. His previous posts include Senior Nurse Business Manager of the Oncology and Breast Care Unit at Guy’s Hospital, Senior Nurse of the Cancer Unit at Oxford and five years as Hospice Director of Harestone Marie Curie Centre in Surrey. Steve left the latter because he wanted to move to a larger hospice. Marie Curie offered him the job of running their new centre in Newcastle but the area was not to his wife’s liking, so he went back into the NHS for a year and a half until the newly created post of Chief Executive and Director of Nursing, at St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds, was advertised. Steve talks at length about his own role within the Hospice, particularly the various changes that he has facilitated. He also discusses the main problems/challenges he has faced, the advantages and disadvantages of being part of a wider Catholic organisation and how working at St Gemma’s compares to his job with Marie Curie.
