| William Odling-Smee |
A consultant surgeon, William Odling-Smee, is one of the founding members of the Northern Ireland Hospice. He has always been
interested in the management of cancer, especially breast cancer, and already had considerable experience working with dying
people even before the idea of a hospice in Belfast was mooted. He also visited St Christopher's Hospice. William Odling-Smee
served as first Chairman of the Council and during the early days provided medical assistance to the domiciliary teams until
a doctor could be employed. He talks in great detail about how the Northern Ireland Hospice came to be established and his
own particular role in this. He also discusses the relationship with the Marie Curie Centre in Belfast and the other two hospices
in Northern Ireland, the management of the Northern Ireland Hospice, the main problems encountered and the geographical position
of Northern Ireland in relation to the rest of the UK.
