By 1995, Cicely Saunders, the acknowledged founder of the hospice movement, had a huge quantity of personal papers
located at St Christopher's Hospice. These papers were clearly of major importance to any detailed study of hospice history.
The papers, however were being kept in the basement of the hospice, where they were prone to deterioration.
Overhead water pipes and occasional flooding to the basement meant the papers should be removed and safeguarded.
A grant from the Sir Halley Stewart Trust allowed the temporary
removal of the papers to Sheffield. Here they were catalogued and
preserved by Paul Lydon, the project archivist.
The Cicely Saunders' papers are now stored in 80 archive boxes
at the Trent Palliative Care Centre, Sheffield. A full catalogue
of their contents has been produced, together with an electronic
database. In due course the papers will be made available for scholarly
consultation at a facility in London.
In addition to the papers of Cicely Saunders, the project now holds
some of the papers of Dr. CDT James; Dr. Robert Twycross; and Victor
Zorza.
We also have an extensive collection of photographic material, hospice
annual reports and newsletters plus an archive of editorials from
key hospice and palliative care journals.
