This timeline lists the first known hospices / homes for the dying in Britain and Ireland
which devoted themselves solely to caring for dying people. The foundation date for each institution
is based upon the year in which its first service provision (home care, day care or in-patient facilities) began.
We provide a brief summary of the history of each hospice.
The are still a number of institutions missing from the timeline and for which we have yet to gather information
on their foundation date and/or historical development. We invite local people to fill in the gaps by writing a
brief account (for editing by us) of the origins of their hospice.
We would like to thank all those, including many local hospices,
who have contributed to the timeline.
Using the navigation bar to the left, it is possible to search
our timeline by hospice name, founding year or location.
